Bullied scholarship student Seraphina is drowned in a campus fountain by Tiffany Vance and her followers. When Tiffany throws an ancient black ring at her face, Seraphina's blood awakens it — and summons Malphas, a King of Hell now bound to her command. He kneels. He asks what she wants. Seraphina wakes praying it was a dream — but the ring is fused to her finger, and Malphas is in the corner of her dorm, watching her sleep. He tells her, almost gently, what he did to Tiffany: she isn't dead, but she'll wish she were. When her roommate Maya bursts in with coffee and campus gossip, she walks straight past Malphas without seeing him. The rules of the world have changed and only Seraphina knows it. The whole campus is whispering about Tiffany Vance — found at dawn, eyes wide open, refusing to blink. Seraphina has to see for herself. She finds Tiffany behind the glass of the campus health center, staring at nothing. And when those dead eyes finally lock onto hers, Tiffany's lips begin to move — silently, mechanically — mouthing three words Seraphina can read but cannot un-see: He's still in me.
